Shindo

Shindo is an effective bodywork method for maintaining flexibility and relieving stress. It has helped many people who have had issues with their musculoskeletal system. An improved quality of sleep is also often mentioned in the feedback.

The objective of Shindo is to individually identify the stress and tensions present in different parts of the body and to help the body relieve these tensions. The idea is to gently remind your body of its internal process of functioning and balancing and to support them by becoming aware of the tensions and then relieving them at your body’s own pace.

The Shindo treatments and exercises, such as stretching, work on two levels simultaneously: they help to remove blockages from the body’s energy pathways, called meridians, while at the same time listening to the presence of muscular tensions and supporting the body in relieving them. The idea is to balance the nervous system, free the fluid circulation and fascia structure in the body, and support the natural functions of the body. The force used in the treatment, the order in which different areas are treated and the pace of the treatment mostly follow the way the body reacts to the treatment and stretches. An important part of the treatment is to respect the history of each individual’s body and adapt the grips, time and strength accordingly, to enable the body to relax on its own terms.

The Shindo treatment

A warm and kind presence and a respectful, distinct touch/press that supports the body instead of just treating it are core elements of the treatment. The treatment should be an experience that allows you to start relieving your tensions and developing a new, possibly more relaxed you at your own pace. It is an excellent way of relieving stress from your body and mind, and it supports you in changes in your life and in maintaining a general state of well-being. If you wish, the treatment may also support muscle recovery in a similar way to massage, but a more comprehensive attention to your body and mind adds extra depth to the treatment. By using a particularly light and delicate touch, it is also possible to support recovery from an illness or treat structures that age has weakened. The treatment may also include some Shindo stretches.

Shindo stretching

The stretching exercises used in Shindo aim at relaxation, meaning they are always done slowly and while listening to your body. The stretches are completed with a few deeper breaths, and the relaxing effect can be intensified using supporting grips. You can apply the grips on yourself, or in a group exercise, the instructor may circulate the room and support each participant in turn. You can also work in pairs in instructed classes. This is highly recommended if you feel comfortable working with others. The stretching exercises can be supported by leaning against a wall, using pillows for support, or using a towel to help you reach your toes as necessary. Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Stretching classes also include other relaxation exercises, active relaxation, and learning to perceive and strengthen your own centre line.

The treatment always takes place on a soft but firm futon mattress or similar, and with your clothes on. For customers, the mattress is safe and comfortable to lie on. It makes it easier to position you on your side, for example, for the effective treatment of your lower back and hip area as well as the outer and inner parts of your legs. The strength applied can be adapted to your body type and your current situation, using a range from very light to moderate pressure that is clearly sensible. There is a wide variety of treatment techniques available: arms, for instance, can be treated using at least six different types of grip. The treatment is always adapted to each individual’s needs and no two treatments that I have done in the past 20 years have been exactly the same.

Each treatment takes either 60 or 85 minutes.
At the workplace, shorter treatments of 10 to 30 minutes are also available.
